CrankBros pedals are fairly sealed and only requires cleaning and greasing every 200-500hrs.
Since we have a few downtime and need to pass time. I figured why not rebuild my egg beater pedals.
The procedure is extremely easy and takes only a few minutes. @5mins for each pedal.
Materials and tools needed:
egg beater rebuild kit
grease
screw driver
pliers
8mm socket
rags
dissasembly: (crank bros)
1. Remove End Plug. Use a penny or flat screw driver
2. Remove Nut. Use 8mm socket and driver
3. Remove spindle. You don't need to remove the pedals from the cranks. (see picture)
4. Remove Cartridge Ball Bearing. Gently tap the pedal body against a hard object. Bearing will fall by gravity.
5. Remove Seal. It is made of plastic. Use screw driver to score it out.
6. Clean Parts. Use rag. Clean the spindle and body.
Installation is the reverse of removal. Lightly lubricate spindle and bushings with grease.
reassembly:
1. Install Cartridge Bearing
2. Install bushing. Make sure it is pushed all the way in the body.
3. Install Seal.
4. Apply grease. Lubricate spindle.
5. Install spindle.
6. Install and secure nut with 8mm socket. 3.5nm.
7. Install end plug. Make sure Oring does not get pinched on the pedal body.
Check for make sure pedal action is smooth. Some drag is normal because of the grease.
Bushing can installed by hand or pliers
Clean and check spindles for wear. Looks good here.
