My officemate wants to get into MTG'ing. His budget is around $600 give or take a few. I promised him to get some recommendations from my all-knowing/experienced tribesmen. So please, help me out. Thanks.

Gary Fisher Marlin, Specialized Rockhopper, Trek 4300.
You can't go wrong with any of these three.

As what Giantmastah mentioned those bikes are good for his price range. He should stay on a hardtail since his budget is limited. If he feels that he needs to have a dual suspension bike he should try to look for a used bike in Craigslist or Ebay.
I had fun on my Specialized Hard Rock Comp 3 years ago.
